Crown Heights
My friends got “renevicted” from their last apartment in Crown Heights, which means that the landlord kicks everyone out at a certain date in order to renovate the building. After they had moved, we went into the basement together to see what may be left behind, which is where we found some photo albums going to be tossed away from what was likely the original family who lived here. We discovered that someone in the family may be a photographer, there were some gems and important archives to Brooklyn history that should be preserved (including pictures of Fulton Street in 1816). I began scanning photos from 1961-1969 and hoping to find someone who could connect me to this family. I decided to use the scans for a metal project where I re-created an ornate door I found on the corner of my friends’ old apartment. The photo scans were UV printed onto steel tiles, and I created the door by plasma cutting two 4x4 foot steel sheets and nailing them together.
